The MiG-21 first flew in 1955 and is still in service. It's cheap, relatively simple and reliable, and (for its era) an easy aircraft to fly without too many handling vices. Really, its biggest problems are poor situational awareness and no room for either more fuel or more avionics - the airframe itself is rock solid.

When Mig-21's were caught off guard and had to dogfight, they were shot down, especially by F-8's who had a good record for shooting down Mig-21's.
